Dr. Claudia Pinkola Estes, Ph. D., Women Who Run With Wolves
Herb & Hex is an initiative to create and nurture a collaborative, flourishing ecosystem of women, children, animals, and plants within the Austin, Texas community and beyond.
Reciprocity with nature and intersectional feminism are both investments in abundance.
When we experience the beauty of nature, teach our children to respect ecological interconnectedness, create healthy relationships with the animals in our lives, form bonds of sisterhood with other women, and show gratitude through environmental conservation work, we are nourishing ourselves.
Science tells us that breathing in the smell of soil exerts a physiological effect on humans. The hormone Oxytocin, the "love" chemical, is released.
Studies show us that plants in the workplace reduce anxiety and stress.
Having a pet or companion animal extends a human lifespan and quality of life according to medical professionals.
Research reveals that maintaining a connection to other women keeps women healthy and happy long term..
When women experience stress, we often "tend and befriend" - connecting with other women and tending to our children, animals, plants. We are more likely to rely on female friendships for social support, and women with female friends have the lowest risk of developing dementia as they age. Women without social connection to other women experience poor mental health and have a weaker immune system.
Herb & Hex asks you to seek the Wild Woman within.
The artist, the medicine woman, the witch in the woods, the traveler, the female pioneers of science are all faces of the Wild Woman.
We can empower women to explore the wilderness and to nurture their health with herbal medicine.
We can teach women how to grow flowers and food.
We can create and celebrate our own art.
We can travel self-assuredly with other women.
We can improve our quality of life and the lives of our animal companions through positive-reinforcement based animal behavior training.
We can restore ecological balance in our environments.
Nature opens herself to her daughters, encouraging us to gather together, to make use of her gifts.
She offers us food, medicine, protection, comfort, communication with our animal companions, benefits to our health, and an endless well of wisdom.
Hear the howl of the wild woman pack, feel the pull of the full moon. Lift your own voice in answer.
It is our task, our gift to ourselves, our legacy to step into our power.
To embody the naturally wild spirit of the divine feminine.
To unleash the healer, adventurer, and creator that lives in the heart of every Wild Woman.
